Dickwads For Glory

Coming clean about who we are and the opportunity we have.

Who are we, anyway?

What are we doing?

What are we making of life?

We’ve done a shit job so far, really.

Can’t we do better?

Of course, we can.

We have the chance to choose and to create whatever we want.

But let’s not fool ourselves. Let us remember. There’s something to make this easier...

artistic rendering, pre-human times

None of this really matters in the end. None of us humans. None of our problems. We are all dust in the end. God and the universe do not need us. No matter what we do, the eternal goes on, unmolested.

Our being here is diversion. It’s an experiment. We are a play.

What will we make of ourselves? What will we do? Will we acknowledge and honor our place in the universe? Or will we fail?

In the grand scheme of things, it does not matter. The eternal goes on.

All of our suffering, and almost all of our pain, this is on us. We have done this. We have been cruel. We have been careless. We have been horribly greedy. We have insisted that we can do what we want and that we know how to do this. We have insisted.

This is a painful mistake because we do not know. Read it and say it out loud, slowly, word by simple word. WE. DO. NOT. KNOW. It is a grave and astronomical mistake to act like we do. We do not really know anything!

  • We do not know who we are.

  • We do not know how we got here.

  • We do not know how any of this happens.

  • We do not know why any of this is happening.

  • We do not even know what this all is! (This life, this reality, this universe).

All of our sciences, all of our discoveries, they can be quite interesting. Science is useful! We should use science. We should learn whatever we can about life and the universe and everything, and then use it for the benefit of all. No freaking doubt. Go humans, go! Go be brilliant! All that we discover about life and the universe, and all that we invent - we can do lots of cool stuff with it all. That can be wonderful! That can contribute to life.

That’s about it, however. Just some wonder, some fun. Maybe some well-being. Maybe, if we are ingenious, we can manage to create some inspiration, some fulfillment, some awesomeness.

Awesomeness: that which is extremely good and inspiring and causes reverence.

But this is not really us. We do not do it. It’s just there somehow.

If we’re ingenious, we can get out of the way enough to be inspiring, to have some awesomeness. If we pay attention, we can find ways to be happy, grateful, and fulfilled. At least sometimes.

And then we’re back being dickwads.

Dickwad: a contemptible person, such as a person who insists that they know what they do not know and then uses it to justify being awful to others.

As far as I can tell, we are all dickwads. All of us make this mistake. I am a dickwad quite often, maybe even right now. What do I really know, anyway?

Nothing.

I do not really know anything.

All that I have are some extremely limited and biased views.

Einstein said it this way:

Physical concepts are free creations of the human mind, and are not, however it may seem, determined by the external world. In our endeavor to understand reality, we are somewhat like a man trying to understand the mechanism of a closed watch. He can see the hands move and hear its ticking, but he has no way of opening the case. If he is ingenious, he may form some picture of a mechanism which could be responsible for all the things he observes, but he will never be quite sure his picture is the only one which could explain his observation. He will never be able to compare his pictures with the real mechanism, and he cannot even imagine the possibility of the meaning of such a comparison.

Albert Einstein in Evolution of Physics, published 1938

You and I will never be able to know how all this actually works. We just have our views, our models of reality. We just have what we made up to explain what is happening. Even this I’m making up! And we cannot even imagine the possibility of the meaning of how our view compares to what is really going on.

We do not really know anything.

We are dickwads (as defined above) because we act otherwise.

And so what? What do we do with all this? What do we do with the knowledge that we don’t know, and that we are dickwads?

Well, try it out!

Sit with this. Where does it leave you?

  • You don’t know anything.

  • You pretend you know a lot and are righteous about it, which makes you a dickwad.

What does this provide? What does it suggest? How does it suggest you be?

How might you be in life if you were honest?

What’s clear to me is that I should be humble. Acknowledge that I don’t know. And maybe I could be grateful as well, grateful for what I have.

I could respect and honor the opportunity I’ve been given.

Maybe we all could surrender to this and appreciate what we’ve been given. It spite of our dickwadness, we have been given the chance to live, the chance to choose who we are in life, the chance to create an astounding array of wonderful (and awful) things. Somehow, we all have the chance to make whatever we want of ourselves.

We did not make this all possible. It was given to us. We do not know how or why. And we are dickwads about it. We don’t deserve it. And yet here we are.

Maybe we all could be honest about this. And grateful for what we have.

I know it’s not easy. I was thirty years old when I finally came clean about this for the first time. It was brutal. For most of my life, I thought I knew better, thought I knew how this should go. The more I pretended, the worse it became. It was horrible. Torturous. Desolate.

Even now, it is not easy. I’m still a dickwad. I still pretend. I pretend I know things I do not know. And I am righteous about them.

But I am on the path now, the path to freedom, to love, to awesomeness. One foot in front of the other for the ultimate triumph. And that’s making all the difference.

This is also a gift. I could fall off! I could get righteous and stupid! I could quite easily forget what I have discovered and get lost once again. It is a gift, the greatest of all gifts, that I am on the path now. I thank and honor whatever made this possible. All glory be to that which makes true triumph possible, makes it possible for me and makes it possible for you.

You and I have been given:

  • The miracle of life.

  • The miracle of language.

  • The opportunity to be, to choose, to create.

What makes this possible? We do not know. We do not know how this works. There is something that makes all of it possible, and we don’t know what it is.

What if we honored that? What if we surrendered to that which makes all of this possible? To that which makes us possible?

Not as a way out of being responsible. Not to get off the hook. We have been given the chance to choose. We’re on the hook for our choices. And we have been given the power to create. We’re on the hook for what we create.

What will we choose? What will we create? What will we do with our chance?

This is how I see it, anyway. Not The Truth. We are all dickwads, and yet we still have the power to choose and to create. What a completely ridiculous miracle!

What are you creating? What are you choosing? What are you doing with your chance?

What will we all make of humanity? What will we all do? Who will we all choose to be, together?

I say it’s time for us all to make this our priority. This is our big freaking chance. I say this is our chance to be miraculous! This is our chance to make good on what we have been given! And I say that this is possible.

We have the chance to make good on the opportunity we’ve been given, all of us together.

We can choose anything. Why don’t we choose to be as glorious as possible? Why don’t we choose to cause the ultimate triumph?

You got something better to do?

Now is our chance, you and me. We are here. We are all in this together. All of the brilliance and heart of 8+ billion people. It’s all here now. We are all here.

Can you not hear the calling? Do you not feel the pull?

Is this not good enough for you?

We have a chance, you and I. A ridiculous chance. An outrageous chance.

We can choose to come together in our ultimate triumph. (Here’s How We Do It.)

And is the alternative not brutal enough for you? Is what we’ve done so far not crappy enough? We may, in fact, be near the end of our chance here on earth, we’ve done such a crap job. And each of us as individuals will certainly reach the end of our chance quite soon! It is coming!

Let us stop messing around. The time has come. It’s now or never.

I can share much more with you. I have great plans. And they still need to be developed. I could do that with you, if that’s your strength. Let me know. I’d love to work with you.

Key now is funding and growth in digital media. I need someone to establish, own, and build UMA’s presence online. This is likely 10-20 hours per week to get us rolling.

Join with me. Help me create this. Help me find the people to do it. Help me grow this conversation.

There’s really not much to lose. We will all be dust soon. No need to worry about that!

What there is to lose is the opportunity we have to be truly awesome. We have the chance to be miraculous. We have the chance to transcend.

This is for us. This is our opportunity. We can live miraculous lives. We can be glorious.

Or we can destroy ourselves and have that be our legacy.

It’s up to us.

Either way, the eternal goes on.
